Sigma Chi's history in Rutherford County originated with the formation of Chi Alpha Pi. This local fraternity was known as the Red Cap Society because they wore Red Cap Ale patches on their blue shirts and blue and white striped blazers. The CAP's were founded June 16, 1966 at Elams Mill by: Bill Landers, Gene Neely, Bill Baskin, Paul Landers, and Jerry Hawk. By their second year at MTSU the CAP's had grown by more than thirty members strong. Their affiliation with Sigma Chi began in the fall of 1967, they petitioned for a charter in the fall of 1969, and the first I-week began on March 30th, 1970 and ended on April 5th, 1970 with the installation of the Eta Gamma Chapter of Sigma Chi.
After 30 years of various fraternity house locations, Greek Row at MTSU opened in 2000 and Sigma Chi's stately grey brick, four columned house anchored the row at Building No Five. The Sigma Chi Fraternity is an undergraduate experience, but all Sigma Chi's make a lifelong commitment to both the organization and the ideals for which it stands. Joining the Stones River Alumni Chapter is one way that Sigma Chi alumni from any university can support a local chapter, kindle bonds of brotherhood, and experience firsthand what it means to say the White Cross of Sigma Chi gains luster by my life!
